What is raised access flooring?

Raised access flooring is a modular, structural floor supported by a grid of pedestals, which provides a void within which building services can be concealed and easily run to the locations required. This space can house electrical and data cabling, HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning), security, fire detection/suppression, telecoms, water and drainage.

Raised access flooring is a very versatile system, allowing flexible positioning of workstations and building services. It provides easy access for repair and maintenance and allows future upgrading of services with minimal disruption to occupants.

Raised floors are ideal for Offices, Computer Rooms and Data Centres, which not only carry large runs of cabling but also generate a significant amount of heat, which can be dissipated, efficiently and reliably using underfloor cooling.

Benefits of raised access floors

Raised access floors provide a void for routing power and data cabling, HVAC systems and other building services. This facilitates future changes to layout and occupancy, provides relatively easy access for maintenance and allows installation of additional or upgraded services.

The Permaflor system includes a wide range of standard and non-standard components and ancillaries to help achieve the most flexible and efficient floor designs. Using the floor void for HVAC services instead of overhead can significantly reduce slab-to-slab heights in multi-floor buildings. Full Air Seal panels are available offering the most airtight solution for HVAC requirements.

PSA and BSEN explained

Raised access flooring must comply with either the PSA Specification Performance or the BSEN12825:2001 European specification. Permaflor manufactures complete raised access flooring systems that comply with both PSA and BSEN specifications.

The PSA (MOB PF2 PS/SPU) specification is well defined and understood by architects and contractors and has been a UK industry standard for over 25 years. There are four independently tested and certified grades in terms of load carrying capability: Extra Heavy, Heavy, Medium and Light grade.

In 2001, the European Standard for Standardisation created the BSEN12825 Specification in order to regularise standards throughout the EU. There are 72 performance standards in four separate categories: ultimate load, safety factor, deflection under working load and dimensional tolerances. BSEN does not require independent testing or certification or have any installation criteria.

Do you provide specifications?

We have an experienced design team who can not only advise on the suitability of different flooring options but also can steer you through the requirements of either PSA or BSEN specifications and support you with CAD drawings and model specifications as needed. We can also supply full Callidus take off drawings for architects and installers to give an accurate quantity take off and fitting plans.

We can also supply Permaflor specifications for you to include in your tender package.

How do I get personal advice?

Permaflor technical representatives cover the whole of the UK and are always available to visit and discuss project requirements and the most suitable options for a cost-effective solution. As the UK’s largest independent raised access floor manufacturer, with a highly experienced in-house technical and specification team, we are able to offer product and specification advice – and in many cases offer more efficient solutions than might otherwise be chosen. Contact us by telephone or email.

Do you manufacture bespoke panels?

Although Permaflor is one of Europe’s largest access floor manufacturers, our purpose-designed plant is highly flexible, allowing short production runs that in turn enables us to offer bespoke solutions on even relatively small projects. We are able to manufacture non-standard sizes, which means it is not always necessary to replace the entire floor on refurbishment projects or renewals, as we can match with the existing floor grid and / or floor panels. This saves cost and disruption.

A wide range of bespoke factory bonded surface finishes are available to order – including marble, engineered real wood, vinyl and the carpet of your choice. We can also upgrade the loadbearing performance of your existing floors to meet changing needs without the inconvenience of shutdown or evacuation.

To discuss your ideas for a bespoke scheme or for advice on options that might avoid wholescale replacement of an existing floor, contact us on 01432 347722.

Where can I get samples?

Should you require samples simply contact our sales team on 01432 347722 and we will arrange for samples to be delivered. Standard products (steel encapsulated) are usually delivered directly from our stock. For bespoke flooring finishes (we are able to apply many different floor coverings from porcelain and ceramic to carpet, vinyl and engineered wood) we can manufacture samples quickly for your approval.

Do you supply ancillaries?

Permaflor offer the complete system. From support pedestals and adhesives to structural steel bridging to pre-manufactured steps and ramps, it is all available from Permaflor.  This means all of the components of the floor can be delivered on the same vehicle, saving time and money.

All of our manufactured panels are matched to the correct range of pedestals that meet the loading requirements of either the PSA or BSEN specifications. Floor height (void) options from just 26mm to over 2000mm are available. We also offer a choice of ventilation panels and factory cut outs (to suit electrical boxes and grommets) and fire barrier solutions.

Whatever the project entails, Permaflor will have the solution and products to suit the requirement.

Do you use recycled materials? Are you environmentally friendly?

We operate a policy that favours the use of recycled or sustainably produced materials and hold full FSC® and PEFC Chain of Custody approval from the Forest Stewardship Council®. The material used for the high-density particleboard core in all our floor panels has a 70% recycled timber content, and a proportion of the steel used for facing and encapsulation is itself recycled. All waste timber and sawdust produced at the factory is used to power our carbon capture, warm air heating system, which heats our factory.

Do you supply the whole of the UK?

Yes, Permaflor products are available throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Ireland and Europe through our network of fully approved independent contractors or directly from the sales team. We also ship Worldwide.
